What Does TimmiT Do?
1. Explore the future
TimmiT is an explorer. We use technology to study history in the field. This provides information to make the best decisions today for the world of tomorrow.
TimmiT's immediate focus is the Whitehorse Copper Belt in southern Yukon. First Nations gathered native copper in the area to create projectile points for hunting in pre-contact days. Commercial copper mining took place there 1900–1920 and 1967–1982. Copper has greater importance today as the world struggles with climate change. It is a critical mineral that is key to moving Canada's economy away from fossil fuels.
Exploration for new copper is currently underway in the Whitehorse Copper Belt in the same general areas that produced copper before. Initial indications of high-grade sources in practical volumes are good. Unfortunately, the implications are not well understood. Emotion often clouds fact.
TimmiT presents the facts to help people understand the implications of copper on policy development, land planning, recreation, heritage, transportation, the economy, and the environment around Whitehorse. This takes the form of
- documenting the historical background, e.g., THENotebook.ca
- writing articles and making presentations, e.g., publications
- guiding informal but focused tours of the Whitehorse Copper Belt for adults and school classes, e.g., tours
In our work, we use computers, satellite imagery, open source data, survey plans, geographical information systems, GPS, lidar, drones, custom software, and boots on the ground.
TimmiT is not employed by the mineral exploration or mining industry and has no financial interest in related companies.
2. Edit and write
TimmiT can
- edit or write your report on some technical or business subject
- guide your staff through preparing your request for proposal (RFP) or response to an RFP
3. Teach your staff about Writing Good
Writing Good is about writing good engineering documents and email in English: a one-day, in-person course taught by a professional engineer at your location in Canada. The course could be generic or customized to your company's style guide.
- assumes that attendees know English grammar so doesn't go there
- recognizes the challenges that English poses, especially as a second language
- focuses on applying principles (engineering, clear communication) instead of memorizing rules
- provides practical examples from real engineering
- includes in-class exercises to reinforce learning points

4. Provide expert generalist services
The world is full of specialists and those who claim to be specialists. Engaging a specialist for a task is appropriate when your problem is well defined from the outset and when the nature of the problem clearly matches an identifiable field of expertise.
Real-world business problems, however, rarely lend themselves to such convenient classification. The nature or the scope of the solution may not be readily apparent, particularly in an environment of change or innovation. Situations such as these require expert generalist services.
